There is a certain terror to the night’s fog, and those who enter may never return. However, there’s also a surreal sense of sublimity deep within, as the haze clouds what may lie behind. Perception of this world becomes subjective; how does one embrace the terror? I find myself between two paths, utterly terrified, yet intrigued.
Quintessence addresses existential turmoil and uncertainty, with the trouble of deciding where to go from a point in time and developing one’s own consciousness. Within these works, I draw upon existentialism and materialist philosophy.
The photographs I produce are night exposures with high grain, shot mostly during foggy nights on walks through my hometown, highlighting the fear one may feel attempting to move on. I also emulate film through the grain and scanned layers of my own hair, personalizing my work to myself and my philosophy.
